Integrated absolute dating approach for terrestrial records of past climate using trapped charge methods

We are looking for a reliable and passionate postdoctoral candidate to join the Luminescence and Electron Spin Resonance Dating Group at Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, for a period of one year with the possibility of extension.

The cadidate will be involved in the ground-breaking INTERTRAP ERC (European Research Council) project that aims at understanding irradiation defects in quartz and developing innovative trapped charge dating measurement protocols.

The fellow will perform methodological studies integrating electron spin resonance (ESR) investigations with luminescence measurements (optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL)) on sedimentary quartz samples collected worldwide. 100% of the engagement will be dedicated to research on understanding defect dynamics in sedimentary quartz using ESR and luminescence.

The candidate will have acces to modern research infrastructure needed for the implementation of the project (new Bruker EMXplus– EPR spectrometer (X and Q band)), 3 Risø TL/OSL readers (model TL/OSL-DA-20, out of which two have single grain attachments), high resolution gamma spectrometry, alpha spectrometry, access to scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy etc.

Your qualifications:
In order to complete our team, we are looking for someone with the following skills :

  • Doctoral degree in physics of chemistry ;
  • to have good experimental skills;
  • Candidates with an equivalent degree in Geosciences or Environmental Sciences are also considered if they are able to demonstrate experience in the research field and interest in developing new analytical approaches.
